Normally, most people will tell you there are not many upgrades for the gpu heatsink for the 5770 cards. The few that are available are *only* available for the reference cards only. With a non-reference card such as the Hawk....you options are nil. Until now Very Happy

A Hawk comes w/ an "aftermarket" gpu heatsink from the factory. The "Twin Frozr" which is a pretty decent heatpiped gpu cooler. However,as most of you know...I like pushing the bondaries of the possible.

A few weeks ago I ran across a claim on Bjorn3d.com of a guy claiming he had fitted an Artic Cooling Accellero S1 Rev. 2 heatsink to a Msi Hawk. Typically, the Accellero is designed as a passive cooler (meaning fanless). The do make an upgraded fan system for attachment to the cooler, the "turbo fan module".

To my way of thinking....42 cfm is good.....but,176 cfm is better Very Happy and I decided to test this guys idea and modify it to suit my needs. Now...he claimed the standoffs for the bracket were too long (true,1.12 mm to long in fact). So I had an idea, making my own out of 1/4" i.d. silicone tubing. Measurements don't have to be so precise (making it easy for anyone to do this). Also,I modified the V.R.M. heatsinks (voltage regulator mosfets) to fit on my board where as the originator of the idea did not. Razz

It was also necessary to modify the base bracket for clearance to avoid making contact w/ several of the SMT (surface mount technology) resistors and capacitors so it would'nt short out the board.

Long story short,if you want the best 5770 there is...but it's not quite enough, you can do this mod and gain a good bit of performance.

The results? 11 degree C drop in idle temperature which allowed and additional bit of headroom for overclocking. Anyway,I'll shut up and let the pics do the talking Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

I had to fully reconfigure my case from using this cooler as the heatsink is so large,it physically touched my hardrives. Necessitating a move (which I'd planned ahead for. The weight did cause the card to sag,and since then (2 days ago),I have fabricated a brace to take the weight off the fiberglass of the card.

Just to note,I also could've used the Scythe Musashi as well. But I don't intend to add a second card (and can't on this mATX motherboard) until later when I upgrade to one of the 790 or 890 southbridge motherboards.

However....the Scythe is a much smaller (physically) cooler and would allow crossfire on a normal pci-e spaced board. Just so's ya know Very Happy Feel free to ask any questions you like.

Bench testing all afternoon and here's the results Very Happy 38Mhz increase in gpu core clock speed and 24Mhz more on gpu memory clocks. For a grand total worth 18056 3d marks....my previous best w/ the stock cooler was 17670. I'm a happy kitty Very Happy

The current (and previous) gen of nVida is absolutely horrific for cooling. Typically, their card temps are 75+ C @ full load for the 4** series. The Hawks don't come w/ a reference design cooler. Rather,a heatpiped monster in comparison, which allows up to 120Mhz higher core clock than the stock designs.

That noted, the 5*** series Ati's are way less power hungry and thermally efficient than the competitiors. Though,nVidia waited for 6 months after the original release date to try and best the Ati's performance, which they marginally did w/ the 480 Fermi over Ati's older 5870. It is only in tesselation performance that Fermi wins by a small margin except in games written for nVidia's architecture where that gap is only a slight bit wider still.

But truth be known....a 7 fps difference in Metro 2033 to a sub playable score of 28 fps max at full settings for the 480,is still just as unplayable on the 5870. Real world performance is very different from the results the synthetic benchmarks provided prior to.

The bad thing about nVidia's taking so long to fix the problem's w/ Fermi's architecture and trying so hard to best Ati's now older cards is.....they are now 3/4's of a generation behind. Ati recently released the revised 5k cards w/ double the GDDR 5 memory of the originals and the gap is increasing in Ati's favor with the planned release of the 6*** series early/mid next year. Things are'nt looking good for nVidia.
